ISOTROPIC AND NEMATIC PHASES

For the isotropic phase we can take the ideal gas as a reference and integrate along the equation of state using the density as the integration parameter

Because the isotropic-nematic transition shows only a very small density jump at low , it is possible to extend the integration through the transition and obtain the free energy of the nematic phase as well.
